Street Soccer for a Cause

Ball-A-Block is our version of the Adopt-A-Block program, but in the process of picking up litter we are also creating open spaces for public use where Houstonians can play street soccer. This is our DIY approach to making use of dilapidated and/or unused concrete structures and flipping them into futsal courts.

The idea is to bring awareness to our neighbors and city officials that live in these communities that long-standing, run-down spaces like those identified could be better served as a public space of play.

Donation-Based Street Soccer in EaDo

We created The Block street soccer court to be an extension of EaDog Park as a place of free play for all Houstonians in East Downtown (EaDo). Unlike our indoor soccer pickups, Houston Town affiliated street soccer pickups at The Block are free to play, though donations are appreciated.

Funds collected from street soccer pickups are invested right back into the Ball-A-Block program to help with cleaning materials, soccer equipment, and court upkeep.

The Block Street Soccer Court at EaDog Park in Houston’s East Downtown (EaDo) neighborhood is located across Polk St. from 8th Wonder Brewery. The Block is a dilapidated concrete structure at EaDog Park that we identified as the first location to clean up and flip as part of the Ball-A-Block program.

Great place to play futsal pickup games. The 5v5 format makes every game fast, technical, and intense. The court transport you, the games are well organized, and the environment is welcoming and competitive at the same time. Amazing vibes, awesome people, and always a fun but challenging experience. Highly recommend to anyone who loves technical soccer.

First time playing Futsal and I got lucky with this place. Everyone was friendly and I didn't hear a negative word the whole two hours I was there. Shout out to Casey, Ahmar (not sure if that's right), and Anish for introducing themselves. It is a competitive adult atmosphere which I enjoyed. Many thanks to the owner for setting this up and I look forward to playing again and contributing anyway I can.

Best place to play futsal and get a good view of the city, dogs at the dog park, and the sunset. If you're a beginner or expert this court is the place for you! The organizer David is quite welcoming and everyone that plays is there to have fun. Spend your time on Sunday evening balling out here when you get the chance, ya won't regret it!

The Block, otherwise an concrete block abandoned by the city, is turned into this amazing futsal court(*FIFA Street vibes*) by an ever enthusiastic and passionate organizer, David.
The players are always respectful and friendly. Every time I have been here, I have met someone new who shares the love for the sport.
The pickup time is usually Sunday evenings, which by then, the court is mostly covered in shade. After the session, folks stick around for some beer while enjoying the downtown views.
Great way to end your weekend!
And did I mention its FREE???

This place embodies the culture, the art and the love for the game, period! You can definitely see the passion and effort the organizer has put to bring this place alive for the community!

The people that participate in the pickup are approachable and friendly. The pickup games definitely make you sweat it out while also being fun. Bonus, soak up some sun and share a beer post-game with a nice view of downtown.

The Block was formerly the concrete foundation of a home, but after being torn down years ago and neglected by the city, has now been turned into the best place in town for some competitive pick-up futsal. With amazing views of downtown, no-hassle parking, and a friendly community of players, if you love playing the beautiful game, you have to come play at The Block.

Pick up soccer games on the weekend, with a great view of downtown, and a friendly, casually competitive group of players. I reccomend bringing water to stay hydrated, and beer to make new friends.

Does it Cost $ to Play?

Nope.

$ donations are appreciated though to help us maintain this space till the City of Houston (hopefully) takes control and makes it a part of EaDog Park.

How do I sign up to play?

Please go to our Houston Town page on Meetup here to RSVP.

How are the Teams Formed?

Teams are randomly selected after you check in. Some people will come with one or two friends and request to play on the same team which is totally fine.

We provide soccer bibs so it’s easy to tell who is on which team.

Do I Need to Wear Shin Guards?

If you practice safe soccer then great, but you don’t have to wear shin guards.
